Полный список источников использованного материала по объему сам потребовал бы целую книгу, поскольку в качестве первичных источников я использовал газетные и журнальные статьи за десять лет, а также обширную личную переписку. Все приведенные в книге описания событий основываются на задокументированных источниках, оттуда же взяты все цитаты. В книге есть несколько отрывков, где разговоры героев приведены в вольном изложении, в частности описание встречи Гудини с сэром Артуром Конан Дойлом в Уиндлсхеме и его разговор с Марджери в комнате ее сына. Но диалоги в этих отрывках не являются вымыслом автора, эти высказывания принадлежат самим героям – хотя и были произнесены при других обстоятельствах.
Что касается первичных источников материала, то в Библиотеке Конгресса в Вашингтоне находится крупнейшая в мире коллекция материалов, посвященных Гудини, включая его личные записные книжки, газетные вырезки, материалы касательно Марджери и практически полную его переписку с сэром Артуром Конан Дойлом. Протокол выступления Гудини в Конгрессе, когда иллюзионист уговаривал принять законопроект, запрещающий медиумические практики в стране, можно прочитать в Национальном архиве. В библиотеке Джорджтаунского университета содержится основная информация об обстоятельствах смерти Гудини вследствие неожиданного удара, в частности в записях Фултона Орслера.
Переписка Ле Роя Крэндона и Дойла в основном хранится в Техасском университете в Остине, в Гуманитарном исследовательском центре имени Гарри Рэнсома. Копию переписки комиссии «В мире науки» и редакционной коллегии можно найти в архиве Кеннета Сильвермана при Историческом центре Гудини в музее Аутагейми в Эпплтоне, штат Висконсин. Отправившись в Эпплтон, я повстречал там коллекционера Тома Больдта, который очень помог мне, предоставив для исследования много писем, в том числе переписку Гудини со Стюартом Грискомом. Большая часть переписки ученых, дознавателей Американского общества психических исследований и Крэндонов хранится в архиве Британского общества психических исследований в библиотеке Кембриджского университета – именно там я сделал около семисот страниц копий документов. Также в Англии, при Лондонском университете, хранятся письма Гарри Прайса, который общался практически со всеми героями «Ведьмы с Лайм-стрит».
Многие газетные и журнальные статьи, которые я цитирую, можно изучить в Нью-Йоркской библиотеке. В Бостонской библиотеке мне посчастливилось повстречать Генри Сканнелла, библиотекаря, который не только знал, как найти нужную информацию в огромном количестве бостонских газет тех дней, но еще и оказался внуком лучшего друга доктора Крэндона – Дэвида Сканнелла. Кроме того, в Бостонской библиотеке я получил доступ к переписке Гудини и Куинси Килби, а также к материалам, касающимся увольнения доктора Крэндона из Бостонской городской больницы.
В Бостонском университете находится архив старых выпусков «Бостон Геральд», и именно там можно прочитать основные статьи о Марджери. Другие письма Гудини хранятся в Библиотеке Хьютона при Гарвардском университете – в Гарвардской театральной коллекции. В архиве Хьютона я изучал и материалы Абрахама Робака.
Важнейшим источником для моего исследования стала неопубликованная работа Марка Ричардсона, посвященная биографии Марджери, – «Истина и медиумизм Марджери». Доступ к ней мне предоставил внук Ричардсона, в чьем архиве в штате Мэн она находится. Дочь Ричардсона, Мэриэн Нестор, собиралась писать свою книгу о Марджери, и кое-какие материалы этой незаконченной работы сохранились в библиотеке Дьюкского университета. Там же я нашел материалы о Джозефе Райне и Уильяме Макдугалле.
