Putting his back to the wall (прислонившись спиной к той стене), he threw in a great piece of it (он завалил вовнутрь большой кусок стены: «из нее»), and going in (и, войдя вовнутрь), threw out another piece (выбросил = завалил наружу другой кусок /стены/). Putting his back to the wall, he threw in a great piece of it, and going in, threw out another piece. But when the cowboy was on the way home with the cattle, the son of the king of Tisean came, took the five heads of the giant, and hurried to the king of Erin.

“What keeps you from laughing, you who used to laugh so loud that the whole world heard you?”

“I’m sorry,” said the Gruagach, “that the daughter of the king of Erin sent you here.”

#img8e3b.jpg  “If you don’t tell me of your own will, I’ll make you tell me,” said the cowboy and he put a face on himself that was terrible to look at, and running through the house like a madman, could find nothing that would give pain enough to the Gruagach but some ropes made of untanned sheepskin hanging on the wall.

He took these down (он снял их; to take /took, taken/), caught the Gruagach (схватил Груагаха; to catch /caught/), fastened his two hands behind him (связал ему обе руки за спиной: «связал его две руки позади него»), and tied his feet (и связал его ноги) so that his little toes were whispering to his ears (так, что его мизинцы оказались прямо у его ушей: «шептались с его ушами»; toe – палец ноги; little – маленький, небольшой /о размере/; little toe – мизинец). “I’ll tell you what stopped my laughing if you set me free.”

So the cowboy unbound him (тогда пастух развязал его; to bind /bound/ – связывать; to unbind /unbound/ – развязывать), the two sat down together (они присели вдвоем: «двое сели вместе»; to sit /sat/), and the Gruagach said (и Груагах сказал), “I lived in this castle here with my twelve sons (я жил здесь, в этом замке, со своими двенадцатью сыновьями). We ate, drank, played cards, and enjoyed ourselves, till one day when my sons and I were playing, a wizard hare came rushing in, jumped on our table, defiled it, and ran away.

“On another day he came again (на следующий: «другой» день он явился снова): but if he did (но хоть бы он /и прибежал/), we were ready for him (мы были готовы к встрече с ним: «к нему»), my twelve sons and myself (мои двенадцать сыновей и я сам). We saw a light before us (мы видели свет перед собой). “There was a large pot over the fire in the room (в комнате был большой котелок над огнем), and a great stork boiling in the pot (и огромный аист варился в том котле; to boil – кипятить; варить). The man of the house said to me (хозяин дома сказал, /обращаясь/ ко мне; man – мужчина, человек; house – дом; man of the house – глава семьи, хозяин дома), ‘There are bundles of rushes at the end of the room (в /другом/ конце комнаты /лежат/ связки тростника; end – конец, окончание; конец, край), go there and sit down with your men (иди туда и присядь там со своими сыновьями: «мужчинами»)!’

I said, ‘I’ll take the iron one’ for I thought in my heart that if an attack should come on me, I could defend myself better with the iron than the wooden pike.

“We had to stop all night that way (нам пришлось провести всю ночь именно так: «таким образом»; to stop – останавливать, задерживать; останавливаться /на непродолжительное время/, гостить, оставаться; way – путь, дорога; способ, метод, образ действия), beaten on the faces by the bones of the stork (с избитыми костями аиста лицами: «побитыми в лица костями аиста»).

“We had to stop all night that way, beaten on the faces by the bones of the stork.

“He does indeed (да, конечно),” said the Gruagach.

“He does indeed,” said the Gruagach.

“I’ll take the wooden one,” said the cowboy; “and you may keep the iron one for yourself.”

“What could I do with the twelve iron ones for myself or my master (что я мог бы сделать с двенадцатью петлями для себя или для своего господина)? I’ll take the wooden one (я возьму деревянную).”

Then the cowboy said to the Gruagach (тогда пастух сказал Груагаху), “It’s a bad thing you have done to me (ты плохо поступил со мной: «это плохой поступок, который ты сделал мне»), for the daughter of the king of Erin will be married the day (поскольку дочь короля Ирландии будет отдана замуж в день) after your laugh is heard (после того, как будет услышан твой смех).”

“Oh! then we must be there in time (мы должны быть там = попасть туда вовремя),” said the Gruagach; and they all made away from the place (и все они отправились прочь из того места; to make away – убежать, улизнуть) as fast as ever they could (так быстро, как они только могли), the cowboy (пастух), the Gruagach (Груагах), and his twelve sons (и его двенадцать сыновей).

On the road they came to a woman (на дороге они встретили одну женщину: «подошли к какой-то женщине») who was crying very hard (которая очень сильно плакала; hard – жесткий; энергично, активно, упорно; очень, чрезвычайно, чрезмерно).

“What is your trouble?” asked the cowboy.

“You need have no care,” said she, “for I will not tell you.”

“You must tell me,” said he, “for I’ll help you out of it.”

“Now come with us,” said the cowboy to the woman and her sons, “to the wedding of the daughter of the king of Erin.”

“It was I (это был я),” said the cowboy.

“And then (и потом = к тому же),” said the Gruagach, “he is the only man in the whole world (он единственный человек во всем мире) I have ever told (которому я когда-либо рассказывал) why I stopped laughing (почему я перестал смеяться), and the only one (и единственный) who has ever seen my fleece of wool (кто вообще-то видел мое шерстяное руно; fleece – руно, овечья шерсть; wool – шерсть).”
