Эта книга началась с вопроса: откуда взялись книжная полка и книжный шкаф? Вскоре вопрос обернулся гипотезой: книжный шкаф, как, по моему убеждению, и все рукотворные предметы, прошел процесс эволюции — и причиной этому были реальные и воображаемые проблемы актуальных технологий. В случае с книжным шкафом речь идет о недостатках различных способов хранения книг.

Проверку такой гипотезы, разумеется, можно — по крайней мере отчасти — начать с книг. Я читал книги, отыскивая в них подтверждения или опровержения своей идеи. Движимый интересом к эволюции книжного шкафа, я нашел самые разные научные работы, предметы и иллюстрации. Они помогли мне проверить мою гипотезу. Я обнаружил, что она подтверждается, а во многих работах, перечисленных в нижеследующей библиографии, и предвосхищается. Самым ценным подспорьем для меня стали два труда: «Уход за книгами» (The Care of Books) Джона Уиллиса Кларка и «Прикованная библиотека» (The Chained Library) Бернетта Хиллмана Стритера.

Хотя гипотезы о происхождении предметов, порожденных технологией, можно, как и все гипотезы, проверить и подтвердить, их, конечно, нельзя доказать в математическом значении этого слова. Возможно, существуют другие источники, в которых есть контрпримеры, опровергающие написанное мной; мне не удалось добраться до таких источников в моих поисках литературы о книгах, библиотеках и библиотечной мебели, но эти поиски я готов признать неполными.
